Calligraphy Workshop FAQs

What time should I arrive for the workshop?

Please arrive around 10 minutes before as the workshop will start promptly at the stated start time.

Do I need to bring anything with me to the workshop?

No, all your tools will be supplied. I suggest not wearing any precious items of clothing as you may get ink on them. Bring your glasses with you if you use them.

What is the pace of the workshop?

During the beginning of the workshop, I try to have everyone doing the same thing but I also encourage everyone to go at their own pace, particularly towards the end as I start to see each attendee developing their own style.

The workshop I want to attend is sold out. Is there a waiting list?

Please drop me an email and I will add you to the waiting list.

I'm left-handed, can I attend one of your workshops?

Yes, you can - I have successfully taught many 'lefties'. The pen holder we use is ambidextrous so it's not a problem, however if you are an over-writer, you may have some difficulties. Please contact me prior to the workshop for more info.

Can children attend the workshop?

Yes, secondary aged children are welcome to attend. All I ask is that I have a contact phone number in case of emergencies if they are not accompanied by an adult. I am DBS checked.

Will I receive enough one-to-one attention during the workshop?

Absolutely! Depending on the venue, the maximum per workshop is 8 or 12 attendees. I make sure to spend equal time with each attendee.

I'm unable to attend the workshop I have booked onto. Can I transfer my space to my friend?

Yes, you can transfer your space to a friend but please let me know prior to the workshop.

I'm unable to attend the workshop I have booked onto. Can I transfer my space to another date?

Unfortunately tickets are non-transferable to another date.

I'm unable to attend the workshop I have booked onto. Can I get a refund?

Unfortunately tickets are non-refundable. Before you book onto the workshop, please ensure you are able to attend.

Is the venue accessible for wheelchairs?

Please see the individual workshop listing which will state the accessibility. I try my best to find venues which are accessible, but this isn't always easy. Sorry if the workshop you wish to attend isn't wheelchair friendly.

How long are the workshops?

Usually 2.5 hours, but please see the individual workshop listing which will state the timings of the specific workshop.

Do I need experience?

My beginners workshops are for (in the words of David Bowie) absolute beginners or those with very little experience. My improvers workshops are suitable for those that have attended a beginners workshop in the past.

After attending a workshop, how long until I am good at calligraphy?

Like with anything, practice makes perfect! I suggest attending an improvers workshop and practising for at least 2 hours a week after the beginners workshop to keep up the skills you would have learned. Calligraphy is a skill that takes time but it is equally important to spend time to develop your own style too!

Will there be refreshments available at the workshop?

Yes - unlimited tea, coffee are provided. Sometimes a light lunch too, depending on which venue! Please see workshop listing for more info.

What happens if you cancel the workshop?

In the rare event that I have to cancel a workshop, I will let you know you as soon as possible. You will receive a full refund or the option to re-book onto another date.
